The company will deploy 10 to 20 Model Ys in its first robotaxi fleet in Austin. Although there is no driver in the vehicles, the system will not operate completely independently. Tesla personnel will be able to access the cars remotely and intervene in them when necessary.

Thus, instead of the “unattended fully autonomous driving” approach that the company frequently mentions, the “attended fully autonomous driving” approach will be adopted. The service will initially operate in a small geographically limited area.
The main reason for implementing the remote control system can be said to be to minimize security risks. Tesla management prioritizes the understanding of “no luxury of making mistakes” in this project. The system will use the supervised version of the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology.
