Tesla is preparing a significant update for its best-selling models in the European and Chinese markets, the Model 3 and Model Y. The company’s long-standing LG Energy Solutions battery system is being replaced by a higher-capacity, lighter version.
Tesla is coming with its next-generation battery
The next-generation M53 cell NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery, developed by LG, both increases energy density and reduces weight compared to existing systems. According to leaked technical data, this battery will significantly increase range in both models.

The Model Y and Model 3, sold in Europe and China since 2021, used LG batteries with a capacity of approximately 79 kWh. The new system’s capacity is reported as 84.7 kWh. In addition to this increase of approximately 6 kWh, the battery weight has also been reduced by 8 kg. Thanks to the increased energy density of the new cells, greater capacity is achieved in a lighter design. The total weight of the new system is measured at 448 kg.
The new battery, which maintains its 400V architecture in terms of technical infrastructure, is also produced by LG Energy Solution. There are notable improvements in range. Leaked information indicates that the range of the Model Y Long Range (dual-motor) version will increase by approximately 32 km to 600 km.
This increase is even more pronounced for the Model 3. Thanks to the new battery, the maximum range will increase by 50 km to 750 km. No data has yet been released regarding updates to other Model Y versions.
Critical technical details regarding the battery, such as charging speed, thermal management, and durability, have not yet been released. The performance of the new cells in these areas will directly impact the Tesla user experience. Such information is expected to be released to the public in the coming weeks.
While there is no definitive date for the new batteries to enter production, the transition is likely to begin in the last quarter of the year. This will allow Tesla to make its products more attractive in the increasingly competitive European and Chinese markets. This update has the potential to increase the company’s appeal, especially to users looking for long range.
