The cost of the Concord project, which has become a black mark in PlayStation’s history, has been revealed. Details shared by former IGN reporter Colin Moriarty, a well-known figure in the industry, on the Sacred Symbols podcast have left many astonished.
Concord cost a whopping $400 million!
Moriarty shed light on what happened with the Concord project during the podcast. He mentioned that he spoke with a developer who worked on the project and learned that it had a total cost of $400 million. This makes Concord the most expensive first-party title in PlayStation’s history.
Initially, the project was funded by ProbablyMonsters, and PlayStation was expected to be just the publisher. However, after Sony acquired the studio, control shifted entirely to PlayStation, and an additional $200 million was spent on the project.
According to Moriarty, the development process over the past 18 months was extremely troubled, with no clear direction regarding gameplay or revenue models.
One of the biggest issues during the development process was the so-called “toxic positivity culture” within the team. The project was marketed internally as the “future of PlayStation” and was aimed at creating a media phenomenon similar to Star Wars.
However, it was reportedly impossible to criticize any flaws in the game. Moriarty summed it up by saying, “No one was allowed to say anything negative about the game. Even mentioning faults in character designs was forbidden.”
Despite its massive budget, Concord’s failure to meet expectations has put immense pressure on PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, who was a big supporter of the project. How this failure will affect Sony’s future plans remains a subject of curiosity.
