German automaker Porsche is preparing to offer wireless charging on its electric Cayenne. Dubbed “Porsche Wireless Charger (PWC),” the system stands out as the manufacturer’s first inductive charging solution. This new technology aims to provide significant convenience for users in addition to wired charging.
Electric Porsche Cayenne to Offer Wireless Charging
Porsche will offer the ability to charge the electric Cayenne with up to 400 kW of peak power via wired charging. However, users can also opt for an 11 kW wireless charging option for an additional fee. This system, called PWC, operates between -40 and 50 degrees Celsius, is unaffected by external factors such as leaves or snow, and boasts nearly 90% efficiency.

The system offers ease of use for drivers. As the vehicle approaches the charging platform, guide lines appear on the digital display along with the front camera image. After the driver positions the vehicle correctly, the Cayenne’s air suspension lowers the body a few centimeters.
The magnetic field is automatically activated, and energy transfer to the battery begins. This charging platform, measuring 60 mm high and weighing 50 kg, does not require a wall-mounted charging unit.
The PWC system will initially be available as an optional feature in the European market. Those wishing to purchase the system will pay an additional £2,000 for the vehicle and £3,000 for the charging platform. The water-cooled receiver unit, which will be integrated into the vehicle, is located behind the vehicle’s front fascia and weighs 15 kg.
Safety is also a priority in the system. For example, if an animal approaches the magnetic field emitted by the platform, the foreign object detection system activates, automatically stopping charging. Charging resumes when the animal moves away.
The PWC is equipped with LTE and wireless LAN modules and offers features such as starting and stopping charging via the “My Porsche” app, adjusting for low-rate hours, and preheating. The top-of-the-line Turbo version of the electric Cayenne is expected to have approximately 1,000 horsepower.
