You have definitely seen a parody account on a social media platform. These accounts imitate well-known people such as a famous politician, phenomenon or artist and satirise their real-life behaviour or discourse. Such accounts, which are usually intended for entertainment or criticism, sometimes attract attention with very creative content. However, users may not easily realise that these are parodies.
The first social media that comes to mind when it comes to parody accounts is undoubtedly X. There are parody accounts for many people, from business people such as Elon Musk to broadcasters, from Ekrem İmamoğlu, President of IBB, to journalists such as Yağız Sabuncuoğlu. Realising this, the company is preparing to take an important step.
X will add tags to parody accounts
While some parody accounts on X make it clear that they are not an official account by adding ‘Parody’ to the displayed name, the vast majority do not. Fortunately, it looks like that won’t be necessary.
According to the information reported, X is working on a tag system to make parody accounts easier to recognise. According to this new system, the profile pages and posts of parody accounts will include the label ‘Parody Account’ just below the username.
According to X’s current policies, parody accounts are allowed on the platform. However, these accounts are strictly prohibited from spreading false information to mislead other users. The policies allow parody accounts to satirise (criticise) or share information, but these actions must be clearly parody in nature.
If X introduces a labelling system for parody accounts, it may be difficult for these accounts to receive this label. Otherwise, there will be no meaning. It is currently unclear when this innovation will come into effect. As a matter of fact, it is currently a claim. An official statement is expected in the coming days.
