The first game that transforms Apple AirPods into a controller has been released on the App Store for iOS and iPadOS. RidePods – Race with Head, a motorcycle racing game, offers players a unique experience by allowing them to steer with head movements.
The game’s developer, Ali Tanış, says he came up with the idea just a few weeks ago while working on another app. Tanış reverse-engineered the sensors that enable Apple’s spatial audio technology. This way, he transformed the AirPods into a motion controller, effectively using their hardware for purposes other than intended.

Tanış explains the game’s core concept as follows: “You steer the motorcycle by tilting your head.” You can also accelerate and brake by moving your head forward or backward. This allows players to take full control of the motorcycle with head movements.

The App Store page warns that the game may not function as expected without compatible headphones. Confirmed compatible models include AirPods Pro and 3rd-generation AirPods.
Described as “The World’s First Headphone-Controlled Motorcycle Racing Game,” RidePods stands out with its fast-paced gameplay. Players must dodge cars, trucks, and various obstacles in traffic. The game challenges you to beat your own score and test your reflexes.
This initiative is a striking example of the creative use of sensors in Apple devices. Similarly, earlier this month, an engineer developed a “squeaky door simulator” using the hidden “LidAngleSensor” API in MacBooks.
Ali Tanış’s work pioneers an innovative use of Apple’s popular headphones beyond their limitations. This new control method, enabled by spatial audio hardware, could inspire many different applications in the future.
