Launched on February 1, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, unfortunately, does not support satellite communication for emergencies. Apple’s satellite connectivity system has started to save lives. The satellite connectivity system was expected by most people to be included in Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series.
Samsung is waiting for satellite connectivity to be ‘ready’ for the Galaxy S23 series
Responding to a question on this issue, TM Roh states that the system is still very limited in terms of infrastructure and that is why they have not taken a step in this regard. “When there is the right timing, infrastructure, and the technology is ready, then of course for Samsung Galaxy, for our mobile division, we would also actively consider adopting this feature as well,” he said. Samsung is expected to take the first step in satellite connectivity after the Snapdragon Satellite system is deployed.
For those who don’t know, there are currently only two big names in the market that support satellite connectivity in their smartphones. These names are Apple and Huawei. This will change in the coming period because the infrastructure will also enter Android phones with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Satellite. Partnering with Iridium, which has 66 powerful satellites in low earth orbit, Qualcomm will make Android phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors and X70 modem units capable of connecting with satellites in mid-2023.
So what will this system do? The system, which will provide two-way communication, will be used to send emergency messages when there is no signal. According to Qualcomm, the message-based system will also be used for normal messaging. But the main focus will be on saving lives. Snapdragon Satellite will first be used in certain countries within the coverage area of Iridium satellites. In the future, it will be extended to other areas such as laptops, tablets or cars, according to the company. This system will be used free of charge in the first phase and then for a small fee.
