The focus of this examination was specifically on the US “Phone” category. This is because, over the years, Google has customized the aggregate 1-5 score for different countries and device types.
Google’s least loved apps
Starting our review, we look at the less popular apps. Interestingly, the app “Device Utility” has the lowest score, earning only 2.1 stars from more than 2,500 reviews. The creation of this app traces back to the Sonos lawsuit. It facilitates the pairing of Google Home devices with outdated firmware.
Several other apps, like the Classroom (2.4 with 2 million reviews), Camera (2.6 with 468,000), and Health Connect (2.8 with 4960), have not fared much better. Apps like Blogger (3.3 with 162,000), Chrome Remote Desktop (3.5 with 220,000), and Wear OS (3.6 with 271,000) receive middling reviews.

The best of the best are the apps with a 4.7 rating – Play Books and Socratic. Play Books, with 2.26 million reviews, provides a reliable platform for reading and listening to audiobooks. The other top-rated app, Socratic, serves as a homework helper and was revamped by Google in 2019/20, with some features now incorporated into the Google Lens Homework filter.
