Apple’s Pro Max series phones have been increasing in thickness with each generation, while boasting more powerful features. According to the latest leak, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the thickest model in the series, measuring 8.7 mm.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is here
This becomes even more evident when compared to previous models. For example, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max was 7.4 mm thick, the 13 Pro Max was 7.7 mm, the 14 Pro Max was 7.9 mm, and the 15 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max were 8.3 mm. The increase in thickness has been noticeable over the past three generations.

Apple’s choice is driven by hardware such as larger batteries, advanced camera systems, and better cooling solutions. The recent standardization of features like 8K video recording, high optical zoom, and larger sensors in these devices requires more space. The increased battery capacity also contributes to this trend.
While a few millimeters of difference may not be noticeable in daily use, smartphones generally appear to be declining in terms of thinness. This suggests that the thin and elegant design is only preserved in some models, while in the most powerful devices, increasing thickness for performance is considered normal.
According to leaks, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the thickest Pro Max model in Apple’s history. This development and the device’s design will be official at the launch event on September 9, 2025. In addition to the iPhone 17 series, the AirPods Pro 3 and the new Apple Watch are also expected to be unveiled at the event.
