Apple is making significant progress in satellite communication technology with the new iPhone 18 series. According to sources close to the company, Apple will support satellite-based 5G connectivity by making hardware changes in the next-generation iPhone models. This development paves the way for Apple to collaborate with Elon Musk’s SpaceX’s Starlink network for internet connectivity in the future.
iPhone 18 Will Offer Satellite-Based Connectivity
Apple introduced Satellite Emergency SOS for the first time with the iPhone 14 series. This feature allowed users to contact emergency services and share their location in areas without cellular signal. The iPhone 18 series takes this connectivity technology to a new level.

According to a report published by The Information, Apple plans to develop iPhone models that support 5G networks, which are independent of terrestrial networks, starting next year. This information suggests that the iPhone 18 series could be one of the first devices capable of providing high-speed data communication via satellite, not just for emergencies.
Currently, Apple is collaborating with Globalstar on satellite connectivity. However, new reports indicate that Globalstar chairman James Monroe is planning to sell the company for $10 billion. This suggests that Globalstar and Apple are preparing to operate independently.
In addition to these developments, SpaceX’s new Starlink satellites support the same frequency spectrum Apple uses for its existing satellite link. This compatibility strengthens the possibility of a potential partnership between the two companies.
In fact, in 2022, Elon Musk offered Apple a $5 billion partnership, but Tim Cook declined. The switch to satellite-based 5G in the iPhone 18 series raises the possibility that the offer, which Tim Cook rejected at the time, could become a reality today.
