Apple’s new iPhone Air may have claimed the title of “thinnest iPhone,” but rumors suggest it won’t last long. The tech world’s attention is already on next year’s anticipated star, the iPhone Fold, which is expected to be even thinner. Here are the details.
iPhone Fold Could Be 20 Percent Thinner Than the Air
It’s never too early to start talking about next year’s iPhone models. The star of its fall 2026 launch will be Apple’s first foldable smartphone. While it doesn’t yet have an official name, this device, known as the “iPhone Fold,” is poised to be Apple’s most radical iPhone model yet.

According to leaked information, the iPhone Fold will be thinner than the ultra-thin iPhone Air not only when folded but also when unfolded. Here’s the expected thickness comparison:
- iPhone Air: 5.6 mm
- iPhone Fold (Open): 4.5 – 4.8 mm
- iPhone Fold (Closed): 9.0 – 9.5 mm
This 4.5-4.8 mm range, reported earlier this year by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, represents an incredible thinness for a foldable phone. According to these estimates, the iPhone Fold will be almost a full millimeter thinner than the already ultra-thin iPhone Air when in use. This translates to 20 percent thinner than the Air.
With the iPhone Fold being this thin, Apple aims to offer users the experience of carrying a folded phone in their pocket with a thickness very similar to the current Pro models (9-9.5 mm) while also using the thinnest iPhone ever when unfolded.
If these estimates prove true, Apple will not only introduce a new model in the foldable phone market, but will also set a new standard for design thinness.
