Unexpected claims have been made for the unforgettable 80s adventure The Goonies. The button for a sequel was pressed approximately 40 years after the first film.
Preparations for a sequel to the Goonies legend have begun
Warner Bros. has reached an agreement with Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for the sequel. Important names from the first film, such as Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus, will be in the producer’s chair. Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will also take part in the production on behalf of Amblin Entertainment.
Lauren Shuler Donner will support the project as an executive producer. It is still unclear who will sit in the director’s chair. The first film, directed by Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus based on Steven Spielberg’s story, was a major box office success at the time it was released and grossed $125 million worldwide.
The point that truly immortalized The Goonies was its unforgettable characters. It also managed to make a big impact on popular culture with its iconic slogans such as “The Goonies never give up!”
No information has yet been shared about the sequel or cast of the first film, which introduced young stars such as Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton to the world of cinema.
Ke Huy Quan said in a statement after winning the Golden Globe last year that the possibility of a sequel was low due to the death of Richard Donner. However, he stated that he was open to reviving his character if the opportunity arose.
