Foldable phone technology made a significant leap in 2023. However, the pioneers of this advancement were not Samsung, but the China-based Oppo and its sister brand OnePlus. Pete Lau, the founder and product manager of Oppo, recently shared images comparing the new Find N5 model with the Samsung Galaxy series.
In these images, it was notable that the Oppo Find N5 features a screen design with almost no visible folding crease, while its Samsung competitor in the foldable phone market showed a noticeable crease that could be called a wrinkle.

The crease that typically appears in the center of foldable phone screens not only creates a visual issue but also marks the point where screen damage begins. This crease becomes more pronounced at lower brightness levels or on dark backgrounds, and users can also feel this noticeable line by touch.
The innovations of the Oppo Find N5 are not limited to the screen alone. Two weeks before its global release, the device was introduced as the world’s first fully waterproof foldable phone with IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 certifications. Additionally, the device is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and will offer 50W wireless charging support.
One of the most striking features of the device is its thickness of just 4.2 mm when unfolded. This measurement shows that it is even thinner than Apple’s M4 iPad Pro model. Of course, the Oppo Find N5 is not expected to be sold in the US, but a version rebranded as the OnePlus Open 2 may be launched in the US.

On the other hand, Samsung is taking a more cautious approach to the foldable phone market this year. The company’s new flagship, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, will be presented as an updated version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition released in China. The new model will have a thinner design but will not feature major technological innovations.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s non-foldable flagship models are also gaining attention. The Galaxy S25 Edge is positioned as a competitor to Apple’s iPhone 17 Air model, expected to be introduced this fall. The design innovations in foldable phones are further intensifying the competition, particularly in the development of thin and lightweight devices.
