Steam continues to share the results of its regular monthly hardware and software surveys. The platform recently published data for January, revealing which hardware and software gamers prefer. So, what are the most popular operating systems?
Most Popular Operating Systems – January 2025
Steam has announced the most popular operating systems for January. According to this data, Windows 11 saw a 1.50% decrease compared to December, bringing its market share down to 53.46%. Despite this drop, it still holds the top position.

Windows 10 ranks second on the list. Although it has been losing market share rapidly in recent months, it managed to gain 0.48% in January, bringing its market share to 42.87%.
Once a popular operating system, Windows 7 remained unchanged last month, maintaining a 0.15% market share.
Windows 11 System Requirements
- Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, with at least 2 cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
- RAM: 4 gigabytes (GB)
- Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device
- System Firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable
- TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
- Graphics Card: DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver
- Display: 9-inch or larger high-resolution (720p) display, with 8 bits per color channel
- Internet Connection & Microsoft Account: Windows 11 Home edition requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account for initial setup. All Windows 11 editions require an internet connection for updates and certain feature downloads.
