A development has generated excitement in the cinema world, and it’s now clear why the anticipated Mummy film is titled The Resurrected. Following this change in plans, preparations have begun for The Mummy 4, a sequel to the original series.
The Mummy 4 is coming
This new film will reunite the franchise’s iconic leads, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Announced late last year and rumored to focus on the horror side, the new Mummy film was not intended to be related to either the original series or the 2017 Tom Cruise-starring remake.

Filming for this film began in June, and a release date has been set. However, a significant change of direction has occurred in the intervening years; the film has now been renamed The Resurrected and is moving in a direction independent of the Mummy series. This paves the way for an entirely new Mummy project.
The new Mummy film, The Mummy 4, will be a direct sequel to the first two films in the original series. In line with this decision, the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the third film in the series released in 2008, will be completely ignored. While Brendan Fraser starred in the third film, Rachel Weisz was not involved in the series.
Now, Fraser and Weisz, who played Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, are returning to portray the same characters after many years. The Mummy 4, which is rapidly taking shape, is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their horror films and working together under the banner Radio Silence. The duo previously directed successful films such as Ready or Not, Scream 5, and Abigail.
No official release date has yet been announced for this new major project, a sequel to the original series. Meanwhile, the independent film, previously announced as a new Mummy film and retitled The Resurrected this week, is expected to hit theaters on April 17, 2026.
