SAIC Motor has begun mass production of the updated version of its electric hatchback, the MG4, at its production facility in Nanjing, China. The official launch date has been announced along with the first vehicle rolling off the production line. The next-generation MG4 will be unveiled in August. Technical specifications and pricing information will also be shared during the unveiling.
The new-generation MG4 is coming by the end of summer!
The new MG4 features numerous updates over the previous version in terms of design, dimensions, and technological infrastructure. Documents submitted to Chinese authorities confirm that the vehicle will be powered by a single 120 kW motor mounted on the rear axle.

This configuration suggests a rear-wheel drive, single-motor drivetrain. The suspension, similar to the previous model, features MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link independent suspension setup at the rear.
The MG4 has seen a significant increase in size. The vehicle will now measure 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height. The wheelbase has also increased to 2,750 mm.
These new dimensions represent a significant increase in both interior volume and cargo space, considering the previous generation’s 4,287 mm length and 2,705 mm wheelbase. This growth positioned the model a step above its direct competitor, the BYD Dolphin.
Design-wise, the front fascia, inspired by MG’s electric roadster, the Cyberster, stands out. The illuminated front logo, split headlight unit, sculpted bumper, and short overhangs, along with the wide body stance, make the vehicle appear more stable and sporty on the road. This new design language elevates the MG4’s exterior appearance to a more striking level than the previous version.
Two new exterior color options are also available with the new MG4. Donglai Purple is a metallic purple with a pearl sheen that changes color depending on the light angle. Qingbo Green, meanwhile, is being introduced as a special green shade produced with special pigments imported from Europe, providing a high-contrast and deep color effect.
In the interior, the MG×OPPO smart cockpit system, jointly developed by MG and OPPO, will be available for the first time. This system supports features such as voice control, synchronization with smartphone apps, and gesture steering. This platform, which makes the driving experience more integrated and personalized, aims to offer high connectivity and convenience in everyday use.
The MG4’s range and battery details have not yet been officially announced. However, according to a statement from MG’s brand director, a semi-solid-state battery option is being developed, and this version is expected to offer a range of up to 800 kilometers according to China’s CLTC testing standards. This information has not yet been confirmed and is expected to be announced at the launch event.
