Toyota is preparing to unveil the 2025 version of its popular hot hatch model, the GR Corolla. This new model comes with a significant innovation: an eight-speed automatic transmission. Named the Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT), this new transmission was recently used in the GR Yaris. Here are the details:
2025 Toyota GR Corolla Comes with an Automatic Transmission
The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla’s transmission optimizes gear shifts by analyzing brake and throttle pedal inputs. Unlike traditional transmissions that rely on parameters like deceleration, G-forces, and speed, this technology is designed differently. However, for manual transmission enthusiasts, a six-speed manual option will still be available.
Interestingly, the gear ratios of the new automatic transmission are quite similar to those of the manual transmission. Additionally, this new transmission features a specialized radiator for optimal cooling even in challenging conditions. Performance-wise, the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine produces 300 horsepower, and torque has been increased to 400 Nm. A Launch Control system will be standard on models equipped with DAT.
To enhance handling, the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla features changes to the front and rear suspension springs. New springs have been added to reduce lift at the inner wheels, and the rear suspension and sway bars have been repositioned. All 2025 models will come standard with front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials.
In terms of exterior design, the front bumper has been redesigned for better cooling, and there are wider brake ducts. In the U.S. market, three trim levels will be available: Core, Premium, and Premium Plus. The Premium Plus version will feature exclusive details like a forged carbon fiber roof, a special hood, matte black alloy wheels, a head-up display, and GR-branded suede leather seats.
The new GR Corolla is set to be available in the U.S. by the end of 2024. However, there are no plans for it to be sold in Europe at this time. Toyota has not yet announced the official pricing for this new model. What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
