The next-generation console war is heating up again with the PlayStation 6 (PS6) and Microsoft’s Xbox console, codenamed Magnus. Leaked technical details from reliable sources indicate that Microsoft’s console will feature more powerful hardware in a performance comparison between the Xbox Magnus and PS6. Industry analysts predict that the Magnus, combining both Zen 6 and RDNA 5 architectures, will surpass its Sony rival in raw processing power.
Sources of the Xbox Magnus and PS6 Performance Difference
The performance difference stems from underlying hardware specifications. According to leaks, the Xbox Magnus’s APU contains 68 RDNA 5 graphics units (CUs), compared to the PS6’s estimated 48 RDNA 5 compute units. Furthermore, the Xbox Magnus supports up to 48 GB of GDDR7 RAM, while the PS6 is rumored to feature 30 GB or 40 GB of RAM. Therefore, this significant hardware difference could create a significant performance advantage in favor of the Xbox, especially on high-refresh-rate displays.

The Xbox Magnus’s APU utilizes AMD’s latest technologies. This APU features up to 11 CPU cores with Zen 6 and Zen 6c architecture (the PS6 is expected to have 8 Zen 6 cores).
Most importantly, the console’s estimated power consumption is up to 350W. This translates to 60-70% more power than the PS6. This higher power consumption supports claims that the Magnus will be 30% faster than the PS6. Meanwhile, the PS6 could feature an NPU with significant AI processing power, as Sony has been investing heavily in AI technologies in recent years.
Both consoles are expected to be released in 2027. However, the Xbox Magnus’s larger and more powerful APU comes with a higher cost. Some analysts suggest the price tag for the new Xbox could exceed $800, or even reach $1200. Therefore, it’s interesting how Microsoft will balance this powerful hardware with its pricing strategy. The balance of power may shift in favor of Xbox this generation, but the PS6 is expected to intensify the competition with its AI and software integration.
