Last year’s HBO series, “The Penguin,” which aired on HBO and focused on the Penguin, one of the darker characters in the DC universe, proved its success not only with its audience interest but also with its Emmy nominations. The series qualified for the 24 categories at the 2025 Emmy nominations, which were announced yesterday. However, despite this success, it appears that expectations for a second season will not be met in the short term.
The Penguin Season 2 Will Arrive Later Than Expected
The future of the series, set in the same universe as The Batman, began to become clear with statements from HBO President Casey Bloys. Speaking at a press conference following the Emmy nominations, Bloys stated that a second season is possible, but unlikely to happen anytime soon. The primary reason for this delay is that Matt Reeves, one of the creators of the series, is currently focusing entirely on The Batman 2.

According to Bloys, Reeves is currently busy with production on the new Batman film, which will take at least another year. Lauren LeFranc, who leads the series, is also working on some ideas for the second season, but the filming process must be completed before these ideas can be finalized and implemented.
The Penguin character will also appear in The Batman 2, and the new season of the series must not conflict with the film. This necessitates that the second season’s script be tailored to the film.
The first season of the series received widespread praise for both its atmosphere and Colin Farrell’s performance. HBO has achieved significant success with the dark tone and adult narrative of this universe. However, the studio’s current priority is the film industry.
All this information suggests that production on the second season of “The Penguin” could begin in 2026, and that the series’ return to the big screen is unlikely to occur before 2027.
The cinematic universe, to be directed by Matt Reeves, is planned to progress gradually. The goal is for each production within this universe to be consistent, and therefore, series projects must keep pace with the film’s pace. “The Penguin” is also part of this strategy.
There is currently no official production schedule for the series’ second season. Developments will depend on how the Penguin plays out within Reeves’s grand plans for the Batman universe.
