Gaming giant Sony has taken a notable stance regarding its popular console, the PlayStation 5 (PS5). The company’s chief financial officer (CFO), Lin Tao, shared important information about the PS5 lifecycle in a new statement. According to Tao, the PS5 will have a longer-than-expected lifespan, and we’re only halfway there.
Why is the PS5 lifespan being extended?
Lin Tao made it clear during the company’s earnings summary webcast that the PS5 is “in the middle of its console lifespan.” He emphasized that there are a large number of active users enjoying the console. Therefore, Sony believes the PS5 is only halfway through its journey and plans to expand it further. This active user base also plays a significant role in the company’s decision.

Five years have passed since the console’s launch in November 2020. This doesn’t mean the PS6 will arrive immediately in 2030. However, Lin Tao’s statements open the door to different scenarios. First, Sony may plan to continue producing and selling the PS5 until 2030. Even in this case, a PS6 release in 2027 or 2028 is possible. Second, even if the company stops selling the console earlier, it may aim to support the PS5 with software support until at least 2030. However, the extended support period will satisfy existing users.
Sony has also experienced lengthy transitions with previous generations. For example, the transition from PS4 to PS5 took quite a long time. The company released its first-party games for the PS4 for several years after the PS5’s release. Furthermore, other publishers and developers continue to release games for the PS4 even today. This demonstrates Sony’s commitment to supporting its current-generation console even after the next console’s release.
