Since Microsoft launched Windows 11, things have been a bit complicated. Users faced issues with updates, disliked interface changes, and new compatibility requirements caused problems. However, Microsoft’s latest moves seem to have significantly increased the number of Windows 11 users.
Windows 11 breaks user records: Is Microsoft’s strategy working?
In June, more people than ever before started using Windows 11. Microsoft’s full-screen ad campaigns and notifications encouraging Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 appear to have been effective. According to Statcounter data, the user rate of Windows 11 rose to 29.7% in June.
This Windows 11 user rate represents a 4.05% increase compared to April. During the same period, the user rate for Windows 10 dropped by 3.93% to 66.1%, the lowest user rate for Windows 10 since December 2019. Despite this, Windows 10 remains popular among users, and many continue to use it even though Microsoft announced that support will end on October 14, 2025.
Microsoft’s steps to accelerate the transition seem to have resonated with users. Interestingly, a company called 0patch announced it would provide micro security patches for Windows 10 until 2030 for an annual subscription fee of 24.95 euros, aimed at small businesses and individual users. Additionally, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for individual users for the first time, though the pricing for these updates has not been determined yet.
How this strategy will play out in the long run remains to be seen. For now, the increase in Windows 11 users is seen as a positive development. However, could new announcements and strategies halt this rise? Time will tell.
