Netflix’s high-budget series, The Witcher, premiered its fourth season today. After garnering significant attention for the first two seasons, the series, which lost momentum in the third, enters a new era with its fourth season. The new season features many significant changes.
The Witcher is back with a new season
Chief among these changes is Henry Cavill’s departure from the series. Cavill, who played Geralt of Rivia in the first three seasons, is absent from the fourth season. Liam Hemsworth takes Geralt’s place.
Geralt, the main character in the first two seasons, is now one of the three main characters in the new season, alongside Ciri and Yennefer. The first signs of this change were already evident in the third season.
Liam Hemsworth isn’t the only new addition to the Witcher cast in the new season. Alongside Hemsworth, veteran actors Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Sharlto Copley (District 9), James Purefoy (Rome), and Danny Woodburn are also joining the cast.
Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer, whose paths were separated by war at the end of the third season, will make both new enemies and new friends as they forge their own paths in the new season. The series will bid farewell after its fifth season, and the fourth season will be the first installment of a two-season finale.
The fourth season wasn’t the only Witcher content released on Netflix today. Along with the new season, Netflix also released a surprise film. Originally planned as a spin-off, The Rats: A Witcher Tale was released alongside the fourth season as an 80-minute film.
In The Rats: A Witcher Tale, set before the new season, six misfits who band together for a heist cross paths with an elderly Witcher. This elderly Witcher is played by Dolph Lundgren.
