Apple’s new Mac mini 2024 model with M4 chip draws attention with modular storage and performance upgrades. Touted as the smallest Mac model, it is also described as the best Mac ever in some reviews. As users take a closer look at this compact computer, even more impressive details emerge.
M4 Mac mini with modular SSD
According to iFixit, the new Mac mini’s internal SSD storage is modular. This means that unlike the SSD built into the motherboard in previous Mac models, the SSD in the new model can be removed. This allows users to upgrade the storage space.
The Mac Studio (M2 Ultra) has a similar modular storage system, but storage upgrades are difficult. Apple’s use of custom SSDs prevents the installation of standard SSDs. It is not yet clear whether the Mac mini (M4) has the same restrictions.
Apple users were able to upgrade the device to 2TB, and Apple has configurations up to 8TB. More affordable and accessible storage upgrades are an important step forward for the repairability of the Mac mini line.
Another interesting design is that even the 256GB Mac mini (M4) uses two SSD modules. This design option allows for faster read and write speeds, ensuring that there is no performance difference between different storage configurations.
