As developments in the world of augmented reality grow rapidly, display technologies have also started to attract attention. Finally, micro-LED displays developed by a US-based company surpass Apple Vision Pro.

Ultra-high resolution micro-LED displays

Mojo Vision, which first appeared at CES 2023 in January, used to produce contact lenses for augmented reality. In recent months, however, it has shifted its focus to micro-LED display panels.

In June, Mojo Vision announced that it was producing micro-LED displays with an ultra-high resolution of 14,000 pixels per inch (PPI). For comparison, the Apple Vision Pro has 3400 PPI and the iPhone 15 Pro Max has around 460 PPI.

The technology builds on Mojo Vision’s previous work on AR contact lenses and its patented “quantum dot” technology. The company’s co-founder Drew Perkins claims that Mojo Vision has “developed a world-class AR display that’s barely the size of a grain of sand.”

The biggest challenges of augmented and mixed reality glasses are their displays. Their low pixel density both diminishes the visual experience and makes them difficult to use. But Mojo Vision’s ultra-compact, high-resolution micro-LED displays could be the solution.

Having completed a $43 million investment round, the company’s future goals are unknown. However, it could revolutionize the AR/VR industry by making a deal with a major technology company.
