ChatGPT, a chatbot launched by US-based artificial intelligence company OpenAI towards the end of 2022, took the world by storm in a short time. This tool, which can interact with people using natural language processing technology, can produce answers to questions from users.
ChatGPT can be used for many purposes, from software development to writing poetry, from solving math problems to getting information about a person. Of course, such an advanced tool does not come at a serious cost to its developer. So how much electricity does ChatGPT consume in a day?
ChatGPT consumes the electricity used by 17 thousand houses
A new report published by The New Yorker revealed that ChatGPT’s electricity consumption for one day is equal to the total energy use of about 17 thousand homes in the United States.
Considering that the average American family consumes 29 kilowatt hours of energy per day, this means that ChatGPT consumes about 493 thousand kilowatt hours of electricity every day. This corresponds to 15 million 6 thousand 920 kilowatt hours per month (30 days). We can express this as 15 thousand 6.92 megawatt hours.
According to a study by Alex de Vries, Data Scientist at the National Bank of the Netherlands, if tech giant Google integrates artificial intelligence into every service, it could lead to a 20-fold increase in electricity consumption. According to de Vries’ estimates, the AI sector will consume between 85 and 134 terawatt hours of electricity in 2027.
