NVIDIA is working on a new technology to improve the HDR gaming experience. Discovered by mod makers, the technology will revolutionize older games by converting their graphics to HDR in real time. This feature will be supported on NVIDIA RTX graphics cards and is referred to as TrueHDR.
NVIDIA to convert old games to HDR with RTX TrueHDR
RTX TrueHDR will act as an SDR to HDR conversion tool, allowing old games to be revitalized. Considering that most games today don’t support HDR, NVIDIA will offer a new experience with HDR calibration options.
NVIDIA has developed a technology that will work directly on RTX graphics cards without the need for developers. The hardware giant will use Tensor cores to analyze SDR frames and convert them to HDR. It’s worth noting that DLSS also uses Tensor cores to boost frame rates.
The new feature has not yet been introduced by the company, but it has been noticed by some mod developers. TrueHDR profile settings in the latest 511.23 drivers hint that this feature could be coming soon.
Developers nowadays need to invest heavily for HDR applications. They need to test on HDR-supported monitors and optimize the entire game for the technology. But NVIDIA could solve this problem with RTX graphics cards.
If TrueHDR is successful, it will be possible to see HDR in all games, old and new. This would open a new door for PC gamers in display technologies.
