Threads, developed and managed by the Instagram team, has made an important move. The platform, which has been completely ad-free since its debut, will now start showing ads on your timeline. Meta has officially announced the start of pre-ad testing for the social network.
Threads starts pre-ad testing in two countries
In November last year, Meta announced that the platform would soon start running ads. It wasn’t long before the company stood by that statement, and is now available with advertising in select countries.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that the ads will start running “with a handful of brands in the United States and Japan.” Just like on X, the ads will appear as images between posts in the feed.
To target the new ads, Meta will use user activity on Threads and Instagram, making recommendations based on the content they’ve engaged with, their email address, and “activity outside of Meta technologies.”
In a statement, the company added that it will monitor initial tests before expanding the application to other regions. The company also stated that the user will be able to customize the ads seen from the Account Center and will include options to skip, hide and report ads in the broadcast.
In addition to ads, Meta’s social network has recently gained new options for scheduling posts. At the same time, recent sources claim that Meta is already working on a Community Notes feature for Threads.
