New York Mayor Eric Adams has taken an important step towards addressing concerns about the impact of social media on young people’s mental health by filing a lawsuit against major social media companies.
Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok sued
The lawsuit, filed in California Superior Court, targets leading platforms such as Meta (formerly Facebook and Instagram), Google (owner of YouTube), Snap Inc. (creator of Snapchat) and ByteDance (parent company of TikTok).
Mayor Adams alleges that these companies knowingly designed their platforms to exploit and addict children and young people, exacerbating the ongoing mental health crisis among young people.
In his statement on the case, Adams emphasized the harmful effects of online content on young people. He emphasized that social media companies should be held accountable for their role in sharing harmful content and contributing to the deterioration of young people’s mental health over the last decade.
Meta, TikTok and YouTube have recently faced numerous lawsuits on behalf of children and educational institutions regarding the addictive nature of their platforms.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently apologized at a US Senate hearing, acknowledging the negative impact of social media on children and families. Despite this, the company continues to work to ensure safe online experiences for young people. Similarly, TikTok has pledged to continue its efforts to improve community safety and address industry-wide challenges with its platform.
But Google, which owns YouTube, has denied the allegations made in the lawsuit. A spokesperson for Alphabet (Google’s parent company) said the company has taken measures to ensure age-appropriate experiences for young users, including strong parental controls.
The outcome of this legal battle could have far-reaching global implications for the regulation of social media and the protection of vulnerable users, especially children and young people.
