TikTok announced the addition of new functionality to its direct messaging (DM) features. Users can now send one-minute voice notes in one-on-one and group chats, as well as share up to nine photos or videos.
TikTok is introducing new messaging features
To send a voice note, users press and hold the microphone icon next to the text box. One-minute audio clips can be created this way. However, caution is advised, as the voice message is sent as soon as the microphone button is released.

Photo and video sharing is also being improved. Users can share both images captured with their cameras and images from their gallery with others. TikTok also offers the option to edit before sending. For security reasons, users cannot send their own photos or videos in their first message; they can only share content that already exists on TikTok.
TikTok also implements age restrictions and security measures for the DM feature. DM is not available to users under 16. There are also some protections for users aged 16-18. TikTok uses systems that automatically detect and block images containing nudity.
This prevents the sender from sending a nudity-containing image, and the recipient never sees it. Users over the age of 18 can enable this security feature in the app settings.
