US President Donald Trump announced that after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, they agreed to end the war in Ukraine. In the meeting between the two leaders, which lasted about 1.5 hours, the demands of the parties and a possible peace process were discussed. In his statement after the meeting, Trump made the world agenda by saying, ‘I agreed with Putin to end the war in Ukraine.’
Ukraine-Russia war ends
Trump’s statement was one of the first concrete steps towards the end of the long-standing war. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, triggering tensions with Ukraine, and then supported pro-Russian separatist groups in eastern Ukraine.

In 2022, it launched a large-scale invasion operation and seized many regions of Ukraine. Of course, the war that has been going on since then has brought about economic and political crises on a global scale.
Especially in recent years, the US and European countries have provided Ukraine with a large amount of military and financial support. Trump drew attention to the extent of this support and said that the US has provided Ukraine with $ 500 billion worth of financial and military support and wants to get this money back by seizing Ukraine’s underground resources. Trump’s statement showed that the US is having difficulties to continue financing the war in Ukraine and is looking for a new strategy.
On the other hand, Russia has been receiving support from countries such as China, North Korea and Iran since the beginning of the war. In particular, Iran’s provision of drones to Russia and North Korea’s sending military ammunition were among the important factors that changed the course of the war.
However, it was not possible to determine a clear winner of the war, despite the fact that Russia had settled in the occupied territories. While the protracted conflicts caused heavy losses for both sides, the economic and political cost of the war increased.
Trump’s statement strengthened the possibility that the US could initiate the diplomatic process to end the war by making a direct agreement with Russia. However, the possibility of Trump reaching an agreement with Putin and bypassing European countries and NATO has also caused controversy. Moreover, if the US President reaches a consensus with Putin on ending the war, it may also mean that the Washington administration will reconsider its support for Ukraine.
On the other hand, it remains unclear how Ukraine will approach this agreement. Therefore, it is already a matter of curiosity how Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will respond to Trump’s plan and whether the Kiev administration will participate in the peace talks. Critical issues such as whether Russia will withdraw from the occupied territories or accept Ukraine’s territorial losses will constitute the most difficult stages of the negotiations.
The meeting between Trump and Putin may open the door to a new era in the Ukraine-Russia war. However, how the process will proceed, under what conditions the negotiations will take place and what concessions the parties will make for peace will become clear in the coming days.
