On the first day of Eid al-Adha, Turkey broke a record in renewable energy. On June 16, electricity generation from solar energy reached an all-time high. This represents an important milestone in Turkey’s clean energy journey.
Turkey breaks solar energy record on the first day of Eid
According to the statement made by Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, 682 thousand 223 megawatts of electricity was generated across Turkey on June 16. A remarkable part of this production was solar energy with 109 thousand 501 megawatts.
This figure shows that the contribution of solar energy to daily electricity generation reached 16.05 percent. However, the real record was broken when the share of solar energy in electricity generation exceeded 44 percent during the day.
In his statement on the subject, Minister Bayraktar underlined that Turkey is acting with the goal of maximizing its potential in renewable energy resources. He also stated that they aim to commission 3,500 megawatts of solar power every year for the next 12 years.
With the commissioning of other renewable energy sources, the share of renewable resources in total electricity generation reached 63 percent on June 16. The share of domestic and renewable resources exceeded 78 percent.
According to the latest data published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Turkey has managed to enter the top 11 worldwide in renewable energy power. Ranking 5th in Europe, Turkey plans to accelerate its solar energy investments in the coming period.
