Turkey’s First National Fast Attack Craft Heads for Sea Trials
Turkey is making significant strides in naval defense as the STM-developed National Fast Attack Craft project officially enters the production phase. Following years of meticulous design and development, the construction of the prototype is now underway at the Istanbul Shipyard. During the TEKNOFEST Mavi Vatan event, STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz confirmed that the vessel is scheduled to touch the water by late 2026 or early 2027. This milestone marks a major advancement for the Turkish defense industry, as it represents the first domestically designed and built platform of this class, aimed at enhancing the maritime capabilities of the Turkish Naval Forces.

After years of planning, the official procurement contract was signed on September 9, 2024. The actual fabrication process reached a symbolic turning point when the first steel was cut on July 8, 2025.

High Maneuverability Defines the Vessel’s Performance
Designed for efficiency in challenging environments, the new fast attack craft boasts a displacement of approximately 700 tons. The propulsion system relies on four diesel engines paired with four steerable water jets, enabling the ship to reach speeds of over 39 knots. With a minimum operational range of 800 nautical miles, the craft is well-suited for coastal defense, reconnaissance, and patrol missions.
The design team placed a premium on stealth by incorporating features that reduce the ship’s radar cross-section and infrared signature. These characteristics are vital for maritime operations in shallow waters and complex surface warfare environments.
Advanced Weaponry Enhances Combat Effectiveness
The weaponry configuration of the National Fast Attack Craft is optimized for modern naval threats. The platform will carry a 76mm main gun, surface-to-surface guided missile systems, and close-in air defense capabilities. Furthermore, the integration of remotely operated 12.7mm weapon systems provides versatile defensive coverage.
The vessel is engineered to coordinate seamlessly with frigates and helicopters during high-intensity maritime engagements.
By incorporating long-range guided munitions, the craft provides a potent punch against surface targets. STM continues to coordinate with the Defense Industry Agency regarding the production of additional units beyond the initial prototype to fully modernize the national fleet.
