Turkish Airlines Secures Massive LEAP-1B Engine Deal With CFM

Turkish Airlines signs a major agreement with CFM International to acquire over 300 LEAP-1B engines and establish a new MRO facility in Turkey.

Turkish Airlines (THY) and engine manufacturer CFM International have officially signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Istanbul to bolster the carrier’s fleet expansion and maintenance capabilities. The agreement covers the acquisition of over 300 LEAP-1B engines, which will power the airline’s firm order of 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, along with an additional 50 options. This strategic partnership, which includes long-term maintenance support, elevates the total number of LEAP-1B engines in the fleets of Turkish Airlines and its subsidiary, AJet, to more than 600 units, reinforcing the carrier’s operational capacity on a global scale.

    • Turkish Airlines finalized a purchase agreement for over 300 LEAP-1B engines to support its growing Boeing 737 MAX fleet.
    • The partnership includes the establishment of a specialized MRO facility within Turkey to enhance regional maintenance operations.
    • The collaboration between Turkish Airlines and CFM International spans nearly four decades of technical cooperation.

New Engine Maintenance Facility Supports Regional Growth

Beyond the acquisition of new propulsion units, the agreement facilitates a significant investment in the Turkish aviation infrastructure. Through a comprehensive material services protocol, THY Teknik A.Ş. will establish a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility. This strategic investment positions Turkey as a primary hub for next-generation engine maintenance in the region. By integrating these advanced technical services, the airline aims to solidify its position as a dominant force in both aircraft and component maintenance markets.

    Strategic Leadership Drives Fleet Modernization

During the signing ceremony, Prof. Murat Şeker, Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines, emphasized that this move is vital for the carrier’s ambitious expansion plans. He noted that the investment in LEAP engine maintenance will significantly upgrade the airline’s technical proficiency. Mikail Akbulut, General Manager of THY Teknik A.Ş., added that the company is committed to enhancing its maintenance capabilities to support the long-term needs of the global aviation sector. Representatives from CFM partners, including Safran CEO Olivier Andriès and GE Aerospace CEO H. Lawrence Culp Jr., highlighted the historical importance of this collaboration, expressing pride in supporting the growth of the world’s most connected airline.

    LEAP-1B Architecture Provides Operational Resilience

The LEAP-1B engine family has achieved a remarkable milestone of over 100 million flight hours since its introduction a decade ago. With more than 10,000 units delivered, the architecture has proven its reliability for the Boeing 737 MAX series. The inclusion of high-pressure turbine durability kits and advanced air intake systems allows for increased time-on-wing, reducing the frequency of required shop visits. These technical improvements deliver double-digit savings in fuel consumption and carbon emissions, directly aligning with the sustainability objectives of Turkish Airlines. As the carrier continues to modernize its fleet, these high-efficiency engines ensure that the airline remains both environmentally responsible and operationally competitive in an increasingly demanding market.
