The Turkish Grand National Assembly’s (TBMM) Digital Media Commission is preparing to impose various sanctions on TikTok due to unethical content. Commission President Hüseyin Yayman stated that TikTok representatives would be invited to TBMM, and the disturbing content on the platform would be addressed.

Yayman mentioned that some TikTok live streams displayed unethical behavior under the guise of fundraising and that such conduct could become a national security issue. He noted that TikTok failed to meet its commitments and that certain content was provocative and harmful.

He expressed concern over inflammatory posts on social media platforms regarding street animals, refugees, and the economy, particularly during the pre-election period. Yayman emphasized that this type of content could cause unrest in society and that social media platforms’ self-regulation mechanisms might be inadequate.

The Digital Media Commission plans to apply various sanctions following discussions with TikTok representatives. Potential penalties include bandwidth reduction, advertising and trade bans, and even revoking the platform’s license. The commission mentioned that these sanctions align with public demands and that further work on this issue is expected in the coming days.
