Türkiye’s investments for the future are continuing at full speed. Investments made both in the public and private sector allow our country to surpass many EU countries in areas such as digital transformation. Another field where Türkiye wants to take the right steps and lead is renewable energy. Most recently, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez, shared the steps and goals our country will take in the field of renewable energy in the coming years.
The Minister announced: Türkiye aims to lead in renewable energy by 2035!
One of Türkiye’s leading companies, Rönesans Holding, and Total Energies, arranged a special ceremony to announce and celebrate new investments to be made in the renewable energy sector. The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez, also participated as a speaker at the ceremony attended by representatives from foreign countries.
Highlighting that there is a significant transformation in energy markets on a global scale, Dönmez said, “In the coming period, we are starting a new investment and reform move in line with our country’s goals in combating climate change, along with a reliable, reasonably priced energy supply.” He listed Türkiye’s goals in three main points:
- To meet Türkiye’s growing energy needs,
- Ensure the effective allocation of resources,
- Diversify resources.
Also, he unveiled Türkiye’s report card on renewable energy. According to the announcement made by the Minister, approximately 55% of the electricity produced in Türkiye comes from renewable energy sources. This places us 12th in the world and 5th in Europe. The goal is to increase this ratio to 65% by 2035.
For this purpose, over the next 12 years, 3000 MW of Solar, 1500 MW of Wind, and a total of 5000 MW of Offshore Wind will be put into operation from all our renewable sources and added to the economy. Agreements have already been signed with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates within the scope of the projects. These three countries will play a significant role in Türkiye’s energy investments, especially in renewable energy, in the coming period.
Will the annual 9500 MW make a difference?
9500 MW of electricity can generate energy for approximately 1 million households. This amount corresponds to about 3% of approximately 30 million households in Türkiye. Additionally, 9500 MW of electricity can power about 100,000 small businesses, which means energy can be provided to about 3% of approximately 3 million small businesses in Türkiye, reducing costs.
Looking at modern transportation vehicles such as electric cars, 9500 MW of electricity can generate electricity for approximately 1 million vehicles. This amount corresponds to about 5% of approximately 20 million vehicles in Türkiye. Of course, there are not currently these many EV category vehicles in our country, but with the increase expected in the coming years, consumption is expected to rise.
Minister Dönmez, who also celebrated the investments to be made by Total Energies, one of France’s largest companies that has recently transformed from an oil and gas company to an energy company, together with Rönesans Holding, said they will provide all kinds of support in all necessary permits from different institutions for the completion of these investments as soon as possible.
In addition to all this, Dönmez also mentioned hydrogen, which he sees as the energy carrier of the future. In his speech, he used the expressions “We believe that hydrogen, which we see as the energy carrier of the future, will make a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions.” and underscored that Türkiye’s renewable energy potential will play a key role in green hydrogen production as well.
He concluded his words by saying, “Therefore, we consider the unity created here today as the first step. I believe that the established goal of reaching 1000 MW should be updated to 5000 MW as soon as possible.”
