BYD, which we have recently heard of with its investments in Turkey, has now signed an agreement with Uber. In this context, BYD said it will offer 100 thousand electric cars to the ride-hailing platform. The giant deal will open the door to both the electrification and renewal of Uber vehicles.
Giant partnership from BYD and Uber
The partnership announced by Uber and BYD covers Uber drivers in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. According to the agreement, drivers contracted with Uber will have affordable access to BYD’s electric vehicle options. They will also receive special discounts on vehicle purchase, charging, maintenance and financing.
The collaboration between the two brands aims to make environmentally friendly transportation more accessible and reduce emissions from ride-hailing. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi underlined the contribution of Uber drivers using electric vehicles to the environment. Accordingly, he said that it will save up to four times more carbon compared to a normal driver due to increased vehicle usage.
BYD will also work with Uber to integrate its electric vehicles with autonomous driving technologies. The companies plan to develop autonomous electric models specifically for ride-hailing networks.
BYD CEO Stella Li said, “Together with Uber, we want to advance the electrification of mobility globally. This collaboration marks an exciting next phase in our mission to promote sustainable transportation solutions.”
The deal does not include the United States, where Uber has previously partnered with Tesla. Last year, BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s largest electric car manufacturer.
