Apple has reportedly succeeded in developing a 5G modem that bypasses Qualcomm’s patents. While the modem lacks advanced features like mmWave, it marks a crucial step toward Apple’s independence in modem technology. However, new leaks suggest that the C1 modem may not be included in the iPhone 17 series. Surprisingly, instead of Qualcomm, another company may step in.
Will MediaTek Modems Replace C1 in the iPhone 17 Series?
Apple’s first in-house 5G modem made its debut with the iPhone 16e, offering enhanced signal performance beyond just 5G connectivity. The C1 modem also occupies less space than Qualcomm’s 5G modem, making it ideal for compact designs like the iPhone 17 Air.

However, the C1 modem lacks mmWave technology, which is essential for ultra-fast network speeds and broad compatibility in advanced markets like the U.S. Due to this limitation, the C1 modem may not be included in the iPhone 17 series.
Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously stated that the iPhone 17 series would continue using Qualcomm’s modems. However, recent reports suggest that Apple aims to completely cut ties with Qualcomm. Instead of the C1 modem, the iPhone 17 series may adopt a MediaTek 5G modem, as it includes mmWave support.
Looking ahead to the iPhone 18, Apple is expected to introduce the C2 modem, an upgraded version of the C1. The C2 modem is anticipated to support satellite communication and offer 6 Gbps download speeds along with carrier signal aggregation.
What do you think about Apple’s potential decision to use a MediaTek 5G modem in the iPhone 17 series? What other surprises could Apple have in store?
