Another highly anticipated announcement at Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event was watchOS 26. Apple announced that its new operating system for smartwatches will be available on compatible Apple Watch models starting Monday, September 15th. This update brings many innovations that will enhance the user experience.
Key Innovations Coming with watchOS 26
As with Apple’s other operating systems, watchOS 26 focuses on its new design language, “Liquid Glass.” This innovative design brings a modern look to Control Center and the Smart Stack feature, while also updating controls within apps. Watch faces featuring photos showcase your photos more impressively thanks to the Liquid Glass design.

One of the most important features, aside from the design itself, is the “Workout Buddy.” This feature works like a personal trainer, sending you personalized motivational messages based on your fitness history. To take advantage of this feature, you need an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone.
Other notable features include “Wrist Flick.” This simple gesture lets you easily reject notifications and incoming calls. The Messages app also includes Live Translation, which eliminates language barriers, and context-driven smart actions. For example, when someone asks for your location, a “Find My” suggestion automatically appears.

watchOS 26 also introduces Hold Assist, making it easier to manage robocalls and customer service calls. The long-awaited Notes app is also making its debut on Apple Watch.
Finally, Siri automatically adjusts the volume of incoming calls and notifications based on ambient noise, preventing your Apple Watch from producing unnecessarily loud sounds in unexpected places.
Which Models Will Receive the Update?
To install watchOS 26, you need at least an Apple Watch Series 6 or later, an Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), or any Apple Watch Ultra. The iPhone you pair with the watch must also be running iOS 26. This means it’s compatible with the iPhone 11 and later models. Unfortunately, the iPhone XS and iPhone XR were removed from the support list this year.
While all Apple Watch models running last year’s watchOS 11 are compatible with this new update, some key features (such as wrist gesture, live translation, automatic volume adjustment, and new smart actions in Messages) will only be available on the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, or Ultra 2.
