WhatsApp is trying out a new feature to ensure users that their conversations are secure. Let’s take a closer look at this feature that you’ll now see in every conversation.
WhatsApp will show whether chats are end-to-end encrypted
In the WhatsApp Android beta version, a new end-to-end encryption indicator has appeared under the name of the person or group within a conversation screen. Users will see that there is a message in the chat windows, indicating that end-to-end encryption is active.
Currently, this feature is only available for a specific beta testing group. However, the good news is that according to reports, it will be rolled out to more users in a few weeks. WABetaInfo first noticed this feature back in January.
You’ll see the indicator briefly where you see other users’ last seen details. This feature will make it easier for users to find securely encrypted chats. Once this brief moment is over, the indicator will gradually disappear to make room for the last seen indicator.
Currently, when you start a chat with someone for the first time on WhatsApp, you receive a notification saying “Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted.” However, this message only appears when you start talking to the person.
Using a status indicator under the person’s name to inform them about encrypted chats would be a smart move to spread awareness about encryption. WhatsApp has long provided end-to-end encryption for chats and video calls. Furthermore, it continually improves the visibility of encryption indicators. Let’s also note that on the platform, chats, video or voice calls, and even status updates are end-to-end encrypted.
