Meta has made a highly controversial decision to protect its own ecosystem. With its updated terms of service, the company aims to completely remove WhatsApp-competitive AIs from the platform. This move spells the end of third-party bots within the messaging giant.
When will WhatsApp’s competing AIs be removed?
The tech giant’s decision will officially take effect on January 15, 2026. From that date onward, users will no longer be able to use any chatbots other than Meta AI within the app. This means popular services like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot will be phased out of the platform after that date.

The process has already begun. OpenAI signaled its withdrawal from the platform last month. Microsoft confirmed this week that it would discontinue support for Copilot. With this strategy, Meta is forcing users to use its own AI model.
While the ban applies to general users, there is a small exception for businesses. Business accounts that use bots for customer service will be able to continue using these tools. However, the data migration process will be somewhat painful for individual users.
ChatGPT users will be able to export their chat history until 2026. However, Copilot users won’t have this option; their Microsoft-based chat history won’t be transferred. Meta’s aggressive stance demonstrates how fierce competition in the AI market has become.
