WhatsApp has started testing a new AI-based feature with its latest beta update on the Android platform. This innovation, called “Writing Help,” allows users to edit their messages with AI support from within the app.
WhatsApp to Offer New AI Feature
The feature is directly integrated into WhatsApp’s existing chat experience and works with a special system that allows message content to be processed without leaving the device. The new feature is based on the Custom Processing infrastructure developed by Meta AI and WhatsApp.

This system ensures that user data does not leave the app, allowing edits to the message content to be made completely within the device and anonymously. Previously on the agenda with functions such as summarizing unread messages in the chat history, AI integration now focuses on improving outgoing messages in terms of form and tone.
The function works with a special button that users can access directly from the emoji keyboard while writing a message. AI-supported suggestions can be received through this button. The system offers various options such as grammar correction, spelling correction, and changing the tone of the message.
Users can restructure their messages in different tones such as “Professional”, “Funny” or “Supportive”. The writing assistant only works on selected messages and the edited content cannot be viewed by either Meta or WhatsApp servers.
The developed messages can be changed or sent as is, depending on the user’s preference. The suggestions created with the help of artificial intelligence are not sent unless reviewed and approved by the user. The recipient does not notice whether the message was edited with such an assistance tool.
