WhatsApp is exploring a new monetization strategy with a WhatsApp paid subscription model, aimed at offering users an ad-free experience. Leaked information from a recent beta version reveals details about the potential cost and how this new service will reshape the popular messaging app used by billions worldwide.
How Will the WhatsApp Paid Subscription Work?
Evidence found in WhatsApp’s Android beta version 2.26.3.9 shows that the company is developing a paid subscription designed to completely eliminate advertisements. According to initial reports, this plan will first target users in Europe and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, leaked screenshots suggest a monthly fee of approximately €4 for the ad-free experience. While Meta has not yet confirmed the final cost, this move indicates a significant shift in how WhatsApp plans to generate revenue from its massive user base.
Currently, ads are displayed in the “Updates” tab, where users view Status posts and browse Channels. These include Status Ads that appear after updates and Promoted Channels offered as suggestions. However, the new subscription model will remove all of these advertisements for paying users.

Subscribers will no longer see promoted content after status updates or receive sponsored channel recommendations. Importantly, core features like private messaging, voice calls, and video calls will remain free for all users. Meta also clarifies that existing ads do not use data from private chats; instead, ad targeting is based on factors like language, general location, and user activity within the Updates tab.
Meta’s Strategy and New Regulations
This paid option is a strategic step to align with regulations in Europe and the UK, which require platforms to offer users a choice between ad-supported and paid services. Meta has already introduced similar subscription models for its other major platforms, Facebook and Instagram, in these regions. Therefore, it is not surprising that WhatsApp is following the same path.
It is expected that subscriptions will be managed through Google Play in-app purchases. The changes could take up to 15 minutes to apply after activation. It remains unclear whether this subscription will be exclusive to WhatsApp or part of a broader Meta Account Center plan covering multiple applications.
For now, the subscription will be completely optional. Users who choose to stay on the free tier will continue to see ads in the Updates tab. WhatsApp has not shared a specific launch timeline, stating that the feature is still in development and must meet all legal requirements before its release.
