Excitement for the next installment in Rockstar Games’ record-breaking GTA series continues to grow by the day. Since December 2023, the company has remained silent, keeping the development process tightly under wraps. While official details are still limited, new developments regarding the game keep surfacing. Most recently, a major update has emerged about the game’s potential release date.
When will GTA 6 be released?
The release date for The Old Country, the latest installment in 2K Games’ popular Mafia series, was revealed recently. According to a post on Steam that was later edited, the game is set to launch on August 8, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.

Set in 1900s Sicily, the new Mafia title had its first trailer debut during last year’s The Game Awards. Additionally, another 2K-published title, Borderlands 4, is scheduled for release on September 24, 2025.
These strategic release moves by 2K Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, provide strong clues about GTA 6’s potential launch window. With Mafia arriving in August and Borderlands in September, it strongly suggests that GTA 6 could hit shelves in either October or November.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick explained in a Bloomberg interview why the GTA 6 release date has yet to be officially announced. He said the level of anticipation for the game is “the highest ever seen for an entertainment product.” He added that the decision to withhold the release date is intended to maintain excitement and keep expectations high.
Zelnick also pointed out that while some game companies reveal release dates years in advance, Take-Two prefers to share concrete details much closer to launch.
