Wikipedia has stopped its AI-powered article summarization feature. The platform suspended this feature, which users had to manually activate only for certain articles on its mobile app, following strong reactions from community editors. Initially planned for a two-week trial period, the app was only active for one day.
Wikipedia has stopped AI summaries
AI-powered summaries were offered to 10 percent of mobile users. However, Wikipedia editors stated that the feature both damaged the credibility of the content and was implemented without sufficient sharing with the community.

One editor emphasized that the implementation of AI summaries by other major platforms such as Google did not mean that Wikipedia had to do the same. He said that this situation could damage the encyclopedia’s reputation. Another editor argued that readers’ intelligence should be respected and that it was unnecessary to join the AI summaries race.
The Wikimedia Foundation announced that it made this decision following criticism and that community feedback played an important role in the decision-making process. The foundation stated that they took into account the feedback from volunteer editors and wanted to preserve Wikipedia as a collaborative knowledge platform.
Although the AI-powered summary feature has been suspended for now, it has not been completely removed. A commitment was made that editors will be informed before a similar application is implemented in the future.
