WinRAR, one of the iconic applications of computers, has fallen victim to a dangerous security flaw. The zero-day bug in the application specifically targets computers working in the trading/investing/cryptocurrency industry. Hackers are accessing accounts and stealing money through WinRAR.
They can infiltrate your computer through a vulnerability in WinRAR
According to a report shared by a cybersecurity firm, hackers have been spreading malicious ZIP files on various trading and cryptocurrency forums since April this year. These archives exploit WinRAR’s vulnerability and can infiltrate a computer.
Computers that fall victim to the malware are exposed to remote access and infected files. Attackers gain access to the victims’ trading accounts and perform unauthorized transactions and money transfers.
So far, the cybersecurity firm has found that more than 130 computers used for commercial purposes have been affected by the attack. However, it is not yet clear how much financial loss has been caused by the vulnerability.
The researchers who discovered the zero-day bug said they contacted the developer company Rarlab. Rarlab has released a WinRAR update to fix the issue. If you are using WinRAR, we recommend that you use version 6.23 or higher.
On the other hand, it should be noted that Microsoft has started to offer .RAR support for Windows after 28 years. The company announced that Windows 11 will add support for popular file formats such as RAR, 7-zip, tar and gz. This means you will be able to open these files without using third-party software like WinRAR.
