The social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), owned by Elon Musk, has taken a new step to help users distinguish between fake and genuine accounts. The platform is rolling out a tagging system specifically designed to separate parody and humor accounts from others. This move aims to reduce confusion caused by parody accounts being mistaken for real ones, a growing issue in recent times. Here are the details:
How will X’s new ‘Parody’ tags work?
According to an announcement by X’s safety team, these new tags will be visible on both account profiles and individual posts. The platform stated that this change aims to improve transparency and protect users from misleading content.
For now, the tags will be implemented on a voluntary basis. Users who want to label their accounts as “Parody, commentary, or fan accounts” can follow these steps:
Settings & Privacy > Your Account > Account Information > Parody, Commentary, and Fan Account Option.
Accounts that opt for this tag will clearly indicate that they mimic a person, group, or organization in a humorous or critical way. However, this step is not mandatory yet, as it depends on the account holders’ initiative. X has announced plans to make these tags mandatory, with further updates to come soon.
In recent years, parody accounts have often caused misunderstandings by posting content that appeared to be from the original individuals or organizations. This has led to significant confusion among media professionals and the public, as well as legal complications on the platform.
