The balance in the gaming world may change. In this context, Xbox said that there are no obstacles to opening up to rival platforms. Company CEO Phil Spencer said in a surprise statement that they can bring their big games to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
Xbox CEO spoke about handheld consoles and PlayStation
Xbox CEO Phil Spencer said that Xbox games will be fully playable on rival platforms such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch in the coming period. In an interview, Spencer stated that there are no obstacles preventing Xbox games from coming to other consoles.
This strategic change actually reflects the steps Xbox has been taking for a while. The company released many games such as Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded and Sea of Thieves on both PlayStation and Nintendo Switch this year. It was even reported that Sea of Thieves sold over 1 million units on these platforms.
Xbox also said that the yet-to-be-released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released on PlayStation early next year. Accordingly, it plans to expand beyond its own ecosystem.
Of course, the biggest crossroads for Xbox is the Halo series. CEO Spencer noted that new games are being developed with Unreal Engine to ensure compatibility across platforms. So the next Halo game could be available on PS and Nintendo Switch.
The Xbox CEO also spoke about the Xbox handheld console. He said that the company is currently working on prototypes and evaluating the market. However, he said that an official Xbox handheld is a few years away from being released.
