Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is continuing its efforts towards its own chipset. The company has reportedly already begun work on the Xiaomi 17S series. This series marks a significant step forward following the May 2025 launch of the Xiaomi 15S Pro, which featured the brand’s first self-developed Xring O1 processor. New leaks suggest this breakthrough will mark the debut of a second-generation chip, the Xring O2.

Xiaomi 17S Arrives

According to information from popular Chinese leakster Smart Pikachu, the Xiaomi 17S series is currently in development. This designation aligns with Xiaomi’s flagship Xiaomi 17 family and suggests that the “S” series is positioned as an experimental companion model based on the company’s in-house silicon chips.

The first model, the 15S Pro, was released as a mid-cycle refresh of the Xiaomi 15 Pro. This device essentially removed the Qualcomm chip and replaced it with Xiaomi’s own processor. Aside from this significant change, the phone didn’t offer any other ambitious innovations, but it represented a critical first step toward reducing dependence on external chip manufacturers.

According to emerging details, the Xiaomi 17S series will continue this effort with updated processing power and a more mature baseband design. The next-generation Xring O2 chip is expected to utilize ARM’s Travis core. This architecture is said to provide a significant performance leap. The ongoing development of network components, in particular, supports the expectation that the device will not be released before 2026.

Like its predecessor, the 17S series is initially expected to be exclusive to the Chinese market. This gives Xiaomi the opportunity to refine its in-house chip technology in a more secure area before considering global expansion.

For now, the company’s global flagship phones will remain reliant on established Qualcomm platforms. Xiaomi’s push for silicon independence isn’t a short-term experiment; the company is preparing to take the next major step in its Xring roadmap.
