Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun made important statements about the company’s position in the automotive sector and its future strategies. Jun said that Xiaomi should now act like an industry leader with global responsibility.
Xiaomi is increasing the safety of its electric vehicles
The emphasis on safety stood out in Lei Jun’s message. The CEO stated that it would not be enough for the electric vehicles to be produced by Xiaomi to meet current safety standards alone; these vehicles should also have safety levels above the sector.

Jun stated that Xiaomi’s 15-year technological experience now brings with it a greater responsibility, saying, “We can no longer act like a startup. Considering the scale and impact of our business, society expects us to act like a true industry leader.”
Behind the company’s emphasis on safety lies a tragic incident that occurred in the recent past. In the accident that occurred at the end of March, Xiaomi’s SU7 model electric car hit a concrete barrier at a speed of approximately 100 km/h while in automatic driving mode.
In the initial investigations conducted after the accident, it was shared that the driver was too late to manually take control of the vehicle. The incident caused a great stir in the Chinese public and brought criticism towards Xiaomi’s autonomous driving systems.
Although Lei Jun’s statements did not directly mention the accident, the improvements to be made in the field of safety were emphasized. It is thought that Xiaomi will not only comply with the current criteria of the industry; it will also adopt an approach that will set new safety standards.
