YouTube has clarified the discussions surrounding its new monetization policy update, which will take effect on July 15th. The company’s content liaison, Renee Richie, clarified the scope and purpose of the update in a video. According to Richie, this new regulation aims to more effectively identify repetitive and mass-produced content.
YouTube is Coming with Its New Update
YouTube has previously restricted certain types of content in its monetization system. However, the July 15th update makes it even more difficult for videos generated by AI or those that directly reuse other content without commentary to generate revenue on the platform. Richie stated that such content is already excluded from monetization due to the policies, but the new system aims to better filter such content.
Another noteworthy detail in the statement is that the definition of “repetitive content” has now been updated to “non-authentic content.” YouTube will now expect originality from content creators, not only in terms of technicality but also in terms of content value.
Even if a video uses previous content, it must enhance it with commentary, explanation, parody, animation, or instructional narrative. Otherwise, the content may be classified as “non-value-added repetition” and lose its right to monetization.
A special emphasis was also placed on AI-generated videos. Richie stated that such content should not be spam and must contribute to the viewer. Furthermore, selecting the “AI-Modified” option at the content upload stage is now mandatory. With this step, YouTube aims to both increase the transparency of AI content and maintain credibility on the platform.
